The controversial handshake row has taken a dramatic turn, with a BCCI official responding to the PCB’s complaints over Indian players not showing up for the handshake and allegedly violating the Spirit of Cricket.
The issue escalated when the PCB formally complained about the Indian players and match referee Andy Pycroft, accusing them of not upholding the Spirit of Cricket.. PCB Chairman Naqvi stated that the board has demanded Pycroft’s removal from the Asia Cup, also citing the Indian players’ refusal to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts as a breach of conduct.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to make an official statement. Reports suggest that the ICC is unlikely to entertain the PCB’s demand to remove Pycroft from the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.

In response, a BCCI official hit back at the PCB, quoting directly from the rulebook:
“If you read the rule book, there is no specification about shaking hands with the opposition. It is a goodwill gesture and a sort of convention, not law, that is followed globally across the sporting spectrum.”
With the ICC reportedly standing firm, Pakistan has allegedly threatened to boycott their September 17 clash against the UAE if their demand is not met. Notably, Pycroft is assigned as the match referee for that game, adding further tension to an already charged tournament.

Pakistan, who are yet to qualify for the Super 4s, are set to play a virtual knockout against the UAE on Thursday. If they boycott the match, the UAE will advance, and Pakistan will be eliminated from the competition. However, with significant financial stakes involved, it is widely expected that Pakistan will play the match and push for qualification to the next stage..
