IPL 2025: Robin Uthappa Highlights Shubman Gill’s Costly Blunder in Eliminator Defeat

Shubman Gill IND vs ENG

Shubman Gill scored only 1 (2) runs before Trent Boult caught him plumb LBW in the 229-run chase in the Eliminator clash against the Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat Titans' bowling was once again under tremendous pressure right from the powerplay, as GT fielders and the wicketkeeper failed to hold onto early catches that came their way. Once the catch was dropped, the MI batter capitalized on the chance. Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma gave a quick start in the powerplay, during which they attacked GT’s best bowler, Prasidh Krishna, who was expected to contain runs in the middle overs.

However, GT bowlers proved expensive in the powerplay, with MI scoring 79/0 in the first six overs. Krishna bowled two overs and conceded 38 runs during that period.

Robin Uthappa, while speaking on JioHotstar, pointed out that using two overs of Prasidh Krishna in the powerplay, especially after his expensive first over might have been Shubman Gill’s biggest blunder. He compared Krishna’s success in the middle overs and also highlighted the dropped catches that proved costly for Gujarat Titans.

“GT’s strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct. The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship,” Uthappa said on JioHotstar”.

Krishna’s Costly Spell Seals GT’s Defeat to MI

Prasidh Krishna finished his spell with 2/52, his most expensive spell of the season. His two wickets were Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir. Prasidh Krishna was GT’s best bowler this season, with 25 wickets in 15 innings at an economy rate of 8.26. He was also the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2025.

As Shubman Gill’s decisions and GT fielders’ errors allowed Mumbai Indians to post 229/5 in 20 overs, GT batters Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar fought back valiantly in the chase. However, Jasprit Bumrah’s unplayable delivery to dismiss Sundar paved the way for Mumbai Indians to defeat Gujarat Titans by 20 runs and qualify for Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
